Facing up to what we did in interrogations

By Friday, January 11, 8:33 PM

The Washington Post
http://www.washingtonpost.com

“I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it.”

— Col. Nathan Jessep to Lt. Daniel Kaffee
“A Few Good Men” (1992)

“You,” said Jack Nicholson’s Jessep to Tom Cruise’s Kaffee, “have the luxury of not knowing what I know.” Viewers of the movie “Zero Dark Thirty” will, according to some informed persons, lose the luxury of not knowing about hard but morally defensible things done on their behalf. Other informed persons, however, say that viewers will be misled because the movie intimates (actually it is ambiguous about this) a crucial role of “enhanced interrogation” in extracting information useful to tracking Osama bin Laden.

In “A Few Good Men,” Col. Jessep insists that a harsh — and proscribed — training method (”Code Red”) saves lives: “You [expletive] people . . .you have no idea how to defend a nation.” “Zero Dark Thirty” explores the boundaries of the permissible when defending not a nation but this nation. Viewers will know going in how the movie ends. They will not know how they will feel when seeing an American tell a detainee, “When you lie to me I hurt you,” and proceed to do so.

The movie, which is primarily about CIA operatives, probably will make at least a cameo appearance in the confirmation hearings for Barack Obama’s nominee as the next CIA director, John Brennan. His 25 years with the CIA included the years when “enhanced interrogation” was used to squeeze crucial information from suspected terrorists.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairman of the intelligence committee, and two colleagues have denounced the movie as “grossly inaccurate and misleading” for its “suggestion” that torture produced information that led to locating bin Laden. But former CIA director Michael Hayden, while saying “there is no way to confirm” that information obtained by “enhanced interrogation” was the “decisive” intelligence in locating bin Laden, insists that such information “helped” lead to bin Laden.

Former attorney general Michael Mukasey goes further: Khalid Sheik Mohammed “broke like a dam” under harsh techniques, including waterboarding, and his “torrent of information” included “the nickname of a trusted courier of bin Laden,” perhaps the one central to the movie’s narrative.
In 2007, Hayden ended the use of half the “enhanced interrogation” techniques, including waterboarding, because U.S. law, our understanding of the threat and our sources of information had changed. He also says, however, that such interrogations produced half our knowledge of al-Qaeda’s structure and activities.

“In the end, everybody breaks, bro — it’s biology,” says the CIA man in the movie, tactically but inaccurately, to the detainee undergoing “enhanced interrogation.” This too familiar term has lost its capacity for making us uneasy. America’s Vietnam failure was foretold when U.S. officials began calling air attacks on North Vietnam “protective reaction strikes,” a semantic obfuscation that revealed moral queasiness. “The great enemy of clear language is insincerity,” wrote George Orwell, who warned about governments resorting to “long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish spurting out ink.”

Viewers of “Zero Dark Thirty” can decide whether or which “enhanced interrogation” measures depicted — slaps, sleep deprivation, humiliation, waterboarding — constitute, in plain English, torture. And they can ponder whether any or all of them would be wrong even if effective.
Mukasey says the phrase “enhanced interrogation techniques” is “so absurdly antiseptic as to imply that it must conceal something unlawful.” Such “harsh techniques” were, he says, used against fewer than one-third of the fewer than 100 “hard-core prisoners” in CIA custody.

The government properly cooperated with the making of this movie because the public needs realism about the world we live in. “We live,” says Col. Jessep, “in a world that has walls. . . . You want me on that wall, you need me on that wall.” Regarding terrorism, the problem is that we live in a world without walls, without ramparts that can be manned for the purpose of repelling an invasion by a massed enemy.
When the CIA woman who drives the pursuit of bin Laden is about to enter, for the first time, the room where “enhanced interrogation” is administered, the CIA man who administers it tells her, “There’s no shame if you want to watch from the monitor.” She, however, knows, and viewers of “Zero Dark Thirty” will understand, it is best to look facts, including choices, in the face.

As details continue to emerge regarding gun control plans that President Barack Obama and the Democrats are pushing behind the scenes, Wyoming lawmakers have a message for the federal government: "Don't tread on us."

Local radio station KTWO reports that lawmakers in Wyoming have proposed a "Firearms Protection Act" that provides a state-level annulment of any ban against semi-automatics or magazines that hold 20 or 30 rounds or more.
If the measure passes, it would mean that anyone--even federal agents-who try to enforce a ban within the state borders could be charged with a felony.
Is this the wave of the future for "red" states concerned about Obama's strong anti-gun intentions?
It is too early to tell. But it is worth noting that Montana lawmakers began pushing for the same kind of legislation as soon as conservatives took control of that state's legislature in 2010.

I used to live in Wyoming, and sometimes I really miss it. I am so very proud of them today, and not at all surprised. I can remember people leaving their keys in the ignitions of trucks worth 30K with the windows down and nothing would happen. Teenage boys would walk down the streets of the small Wyoming town where I lived with rifles or shotguns slung casually over their shoulders, walking home after a buddy dropped them off from a morning's hunt. They would smile and nod at me as we passed on the street. Wyoming has open carry, like a lot of Western states. While living there I often left my doors unlocked, to both my home and my car. I never had a problem. People there were quiet, polite, and armed to the teeth. I think the reason there was no crime is mainly because it just would not occur to anyone to take something that did not belong to them. If you needed help, you asked your neighbor, and they would help you. It was just understood that everyone helped others. A few people did drugs but they mainly kept to themselves. Many of my neighbors were descended from pioneers that settled the area, including one lady whose ancestor was one of only a handful of Americans to ever survive being scalped by an Indian. Yes, they are tough people. I miss them. Anyone who screws with Wyoming does so at their peril.
That was my experience living in a small town in Wyoming.

He is standing in front of idiot New York progressives and screaming that no one needs ten round mags to go hunting and to stop the madness. I can guarantee Cuomo, Obama, Biden and other political socialist will not disarm America. This is a constitutional fight that I am prepaired for, they are not. It is entirely one thing to be fraudulently elected president. It is another to attempt to tear apart our constitution and disarm its citizens like Nazis. Oh and I am a soldier, and I will not obey an order to take away weapons from lawful citizens. I'll go to court martial or jail before I follow an illegal unconstitutional order like that.

Thank you for supporting the Constitution, you are a patriot in many senses of the word.

Punished for what? We have broken no law. All we have done is to disagree with you and your ilk. There is your tyranny.
"The supporters on this site of this insane tyranny concept can't understand how ridiculous it is given that five years ago, your side was in charge and four years from now there will be another general election."
Our nation was not conceived as a dictatorship. The president is not the one who is "in charge",he is a a glorified mascot with the power to declare war for a mere 90 days without congressional approval. No matter which political party is in office, the People are the ones who are supposed to be "in charge".
And I highly doubt there will be another election four years from now. The left is talking about repealing term limits on the presidency.
And obviously, our wishes are NOT being represented at the governmental level or neither Obamacare nor this latest round of taxes would have come to pass.
We are being tyrannized, and your side is gearing up to terrorize us some more for belonging to the wrong political class, or "punish" us for it, as you put it.
Having a different set of political beliefs is not a crime, when people are punished without breaking laws, there you have tyranny.

What the heck are you talking about "your side"? And "you control the House"?
What's this got to do with it?
In a republic, such as we are, no "side" can deprive any citizen of their natural rights. Self defense is a natural right. There are no "sides" involved here. There is however, a guarantee by the Constitution that no simple majority has any power to deprive any individual, whether he belongs to any political party or not, of their basic, fundamental, human rights.
It is obscene to state that we must put our children in an undefended enclosure, and that we are not permitted, by law, to defend them from harm. I don't care if you are Repugnican or Democrap, you can't trump natural rights of anyone. Which is why I no longer side with either political group. All they have succeeded in doing is dividing and conquering American individualism and liberty.

@Gary - It is not about "being punished." The Constitution is there
for all people. We are a country of LAWS, not MAJORITY RULES. Elected officials get their power from the People, and should represent their constituents.  It should not matter which party is in power – the Constitution governs all, and all elected officials swear to follow and uphold the Constitution.  If we ruled the country by majority, then Muslims would have no rights (1% of the population) and there would be no Islamic temples or Sharia-anything, and gays/lesbians would have no rights (<3 a="a" and="and" banana="banana" bullies="bullies" by="by" dictatorships="dictatorships" disagree="disagree" div="div" do="do" future="future" get="get" high="high" i.e.="i.e." if="if" in="in" is="is" it="it" junior="junior" majority="majority" makes="makes" nbsp="nbsp" o="o" ok="ok" party="party" political="political" power="power" punished="punished" re="re" republic="republic" rules.="rules." rules="rules" run="run" school-yard="school-yard" school="school" some="some" that="that" the="the" they="they" time="time" tyranny="tyranny" want="want" we="we" what="what" whatever="whatever" when="when" whoever="whoever" with="with" you="you">

The government you advocate for sets up dictatorships in foreign lands to oppress their peoples, then sets up armed coups to overthrow them every twenty years.  Our government put Saddam Hussein in power to overthrow the Shah of Iran, our government took Saddam Hussein out of power despite a lot of popular support from his citizens. Our government armed Osama Bin Laden and  the Taliban to fight the Russians in the 80's,our government took Bin Laden out of power, our government attempted to initiate a coup against Fidel Castro using his own people which they royally eff'd up and got caught red-handed doing it.Our government has brokered deals with South American,Asian, and Mexican drug cartels to overthrow or circumvent their respective governments and traded guns for drugs with them while maintaining a public "War on Drugs" the whole time. Our government has armed, ensconced in positions of high office, and empowered jihadists who oppress women, cannibal drug kingpins in the Orient and Africa, violent revolutionaries who go on to ethnically cleanse their own people while we turn a blind eye,and human monsters who devour life and hope in their wake.
Our government has overthrown more popularly elected leaders of other countries than spent millions of our tax dollars. This is public information. You learned about it in school. They TOLD you they did it.
And you think they're the good guys?
THEY are not trying to protect you. WE are trying to protect you,but you are making it really hard for us.
If they are willing to do this stuff to others, why do you believe they won't do it to you?
"(Not what anyone here seems to want even though that makes you appear insane)."
Here is what is INSANE
All of these people were disarmed before this happened.
What is insane is setting up the conditions that would allow hundreds of millions to die while claiming you want to make people safer. What is insane is repeating mistakes that hundreds of millions have tearfully vowed to NEVER allow to be repeated as they said goodbye to their loved ones.
Mass death does not necessarily follow from disarming the population, but without disarmament, these mass killings could never have occurred. Those killed in the Holocaust would have survived to hold their grandchildren had they not surrendered their weapons. This fact is indisputable.
You,my dear little serf, are insane.

They did it because they could not afford to permit a Washingtonian outsider to get access to the secret government centered in DC.
And Sandy Hook was a false flag event designed to convince Americans they should give up their rights of self defense. But every other country which has done so, has regretted the day.

Gary, admittedly there is frustration in these posts but I believe you do not understand the issue.  You see, gun owners are innocent equally as much as non gun owners.  The issue is that Obama and company have an agenda that does not address the real problem.  The real problem is that any form of weapon in the hands of a criminal needs to be stopped.  Every responsible gun owner agrees with that.  But punishing and restricting responsible ownership misses the target altogether.  Therefore, any action on the part of the government to punish the innocent or merely those who do not have the same view as the government makes the government tyrants by virtue of their action.  Secondly, the over arching purpose of the second amendment allows for innocent citizens to protect themselves from a tyrannical government.  That right needs to be protected and fought for.

I'd be willing to bet that more people have been murdered by abortion since 1973 than those who've died from guns in the same time period.

Gary:  No one is advocating an armed rebellion.  What is simply being stated by many law-abiding citizen gun owners is that they will not relinquish their weapons to anyone, least of all the federal govt.  Tragically the State-controlled media doesn't publicize all of the lives saved because citizens do have weaponry.  Just yesterday at 15-year-old sheriff deputy's son, home alone with his 12-year-old sister, shot one of two thugs who entered their hous by breaking a rear window.  He shot the older one, and both thugs fled.  They showed up later at a local hospital, and officials called cops.  They're now in jail.  Boy was properly trained in handling the AR15, and said he was 'afraid of what they might do to his sister'.  There are videos and stories like this daily and countrywide.  Do you have a problem with the boy's actions?  Bet you do.  You probably feel he should have reasoned with the thugs and not shot the older one (he would have shot the younger one but he fled).   Sorry Gary.  It doesn't happen that way.

Gary, read about what happened in Russia and China after the "liberal" factions that were "trying to protect society" took power there.  Millions died from starvation and millions were put to death, books were burned and art became property of the state.  Here is a sad truth throughout history; free societies are birthed from violent insurrections of people who want to be free and totalitarian societies are birthed from violent insurrections of people who want everyone else to think like them.  American gun owners, by-and-large, just want to be free.  Taking our guns and leaving only the progressives that want everyone to think like them wilth guns will not produce the results your "cooler head" might perceive.  Notably, many of the factions that consider themselves to be "liberals" were the first to be irradiated under the socialist regimes of the past.

I am an upstanding citizen.  I seek only to protect myself and my loved ones from predators.  Trouble is, those who would seek to disarm me include some people who have temporarily been elected to represent me.  By daring to forcibly disarm me and tens of millions of people like me, these folks are setting themselves up as enemies of the People.
I prefer no armed rebellion over the rule of law.  But the liberty-hating few would do well to remember the source of liberty and the rights we have as citizens in the USA.  These things are preexisting, and they are PROTECTED from infringement and abuse by the governing few.  Oaths have been sworn by these people, hired to temporarily represent the People, to both protect and defend the Constitution, not to tear it down.
Keep in mind the simple distinction between those who love violence and those who seek to avoid it no matter the cost.  Criminals love violence and seek to prey upon their target victims.  Upstanding citizens are exactly the opposite, desiring to avoid such violence at whatever cost to the predators seeking to impose it.  And, when it comes to disarmament, the class of "predator" includes any and all who would dare forcibly strip citizens of their ability to effectively defend themselves against predation.
Don't disrespect the tens on millions of upstanding citizens in this country simply because you fear firearms.  Don't support gutting the Constitution's protections against the governing few stripping the power of the People to defend themselves against predators.  Don't you dare lump me in with insurrectionists and revolutionists who promote the violent overthrow of our form of governance.  I'm simply the neighbor next door, one who will protect myself and my loved ones against all predators who come to harm us ... no matter the cost.
And once you've done your banging of fists on the table about how bad firearms are, keep in mind how easy predation becomes for predators once potential victims are disarmed.  You, too, are one of those potential victims.  And if disarmed, you too would be incapable of mounting an effective defense against violent predators who seek to take everything you've got.  Crying out at the moment of predation that this wasn't what you wanted won't get you very far.  ONLY being capable of withstanding the predation as it occurs will have a chance of helping you.
Which is the whole point of the Second Amendment's assurance of disallowing disarmament of the People:  that every person will forevermore be capable of pursuing life, liberty and happiness while remaining capable of guarding against any and all attempts to forcibly take such things from them.  It's the one thing in our nation that helps keep the predators at bay.  Without it, each of us is merely "food" to such predators, without any effective means of stopping such predation.

Thomas Jefferson - "Those who turn their guns into plowshares will plow for those who don't"
Thomas Jefferson concluded in his personal journal that to make any law that prohibits a sane law abiding citizen to any firearm is to ban water or fire since evil has used these elements for it's goals. He also states that it is much easier for an assailant to attack an unarmed man rather an armed one, and that laws only restrict those who would follow them.
Benjamin Franklin - "We must all hang together, or most assuredly we will all hang separately"
And.....
"The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the supply of arms to the underdogs is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or native police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order throughout the occupied Russian territories, and a system of military strong-points must be evolved to cover the entire occupied country." --Adolf Hitler

Learned it history class. I went to a school that didn't have a liberal in the building. Also I still teach myself history and read because I will not be doomed to repeat it. It's a shame that 99% of Americans are history illiterate.

It is an utter shame that those words are no longer taught in our schools. And you thought that those progressive socialist professors were leaving out American history because of time constraints? Ah yeah.

Imagine what all the war dead on beaches like Omaha, and Normandy would be saying if they were alive today and saw what these liberal bastards are trying to do? If civil war breaks out I will choose the side of freedom that loves and respects our constitution and our beloved American traditions over the progressive socialist collective illness, that promotes group think, enslaves us under government rule. And crushes the American spirit of exceptionalism. God bless America. F**k Barack Obama the tyrant.

Can't speak for the dead but the WWII vets I work with are beyond livid with the dictator in chief. They want him_____ ( fill in the blank with things that can't be said over the internet ). One of the board members I work with is a highly decorated WWII pilot who at one point in a conversation with me wept openly about the direction our country is heading and related to me how depressed he was over it. Its very difficult to see these brave and honorable men and women face their final years with so much grief over their beloved country. I see it all the time unfortunately.

Isn't there anybody out there who can defend the right to use arms and discuss coherently how to control violence caused by weapons without sounding insane or just ignorant? (Socialist progressive pipsqueak isn't what a normal, responsible adult would argue.) Whatever happens, you will need the NRA to defend you because you are incapable of producing a cogent argument without whining about the 2nd. Those who want this violence to stop don't care about your whining, they want some adult, constructive discussions. I know this falls on deaf and probably insanely stupid ears but there are other competing constitutional issues, including life and property to consider. joadcycle.

1. You aren't as smart as you think you are.
2. Nobody cares what you think.
3. You're wrong about every point you've made.

The 2nd amendment is a RIGHT that's why it's the second amendment in the BILL OF RIGHTS. And NONE Of our RIGHTS are open to compromise, discussion or limitation.
And that is ALL that needs to be said. You have no ground to judge us for simply pointing out that our RIGHTS are not YOURS to give to us!
 4. Nobody is with you. If you wish to freely give up your rights, go ahead. But you don't speak for anybody else.

Correct - it is a RIGHT, not a NEED.  And the RIGHT does not come from any government or individual - it is a God-given right to protect oneself and one's family.  No one can take that right away.  End of discussion.

Gary, can you explain how more laws and regulations pertaining to firearms do anything to deter those already hellbent on carrying out illegal activities?  Mass murder is illegal, you know.
Additionally, can you explain how disarming tens of millions of completely harmless responsible people does anything other than empower criminals (who will remain armed)?
Do you really expect concepts like "universal background checks" or "registration of assult weapons, magazines, and ammo" to do anything?
There are an estimated 300 million guns in the United States.  It is completely irrational to propose the governement (which can't even get your mail where it is supposed to go even while going millions in the hole each day) could effectively regulate them or keep the "good" guys safe from the armed "bad" guys.
How would you feel about your government if suddenly maintaining your right to defend yourself made you a criminal?  I can think of some reasons why government wants to know all about what law-abiding citizens own, and saving kids is not one of them.
Like many gun-control advocates, you project the actions of evil, sick people on to perfectly decent Americans, just because they own firearms.  If someone dies in a DWI car crash, I wouldn't take away your car or any beer you may have in your refridgerator.  I also wouldn't project that DWI driver's horrendous act on to you, if you happened to own a car and some beer.
